Catherine had a lot of pain in her American life.

My Mom remembered her well and loved her very much. And, although everyone has her name down as spelled with a "C", she often, but not always, spelled Catherine with a "K".Ĭatherine immigrated in about 1880 and, like many young Irish immigrant women, was a household cook and servant until she married Michael McShea in 1889 in Philadelphia, PA. None-the-less, she used it often on legal records such as her sons' (John and Joe McShea) birth records. Apparently, she wasn't fond of her nickname. However, Aunt Vera (Keenan) Sopczynski told me that when she was born, my grandparents were thinking of naming her Catherine or Kathleen but they were talked out of it by Catherine because she said "They'll call her Kate if you name her that".
